This project was a very detailed 2000-square-foot glue down installation, which didn't leave a margin for error. The product being installed was 11/2 x 2 1/4 x 7' -10' length quarter sawn Maple, and the architects’ design required that there be 46 separate pie shapes, each at a 7.83 degree angle to create the overall 180 degree starburst element. At all locations, where pie shapes met one another, the joints of each board had to line up with the joints of the adjacent pie shape. The installation required that right hand and left hand jigs be set up to maintain this critical joint detail. All pieces were re-grooved in order to spline the floor together. There were also a series of radius cuts back into the body of the floor to match design elements of the ceiling. The floor was completely sanded and every other pie shape was masked and stained a custom water dye and oil stain to achieve a match to the architects custom color requirements. After staining, the floor was sealed with two coats of waterbased sealer and finished with three coats of commercial waterbase finish.

To further complicate the project, the entire space was under a 24-hour-a-day construction schedule with an extremely tight schedule for completion. The only time the space was available to us was from 8 p .m. to 6 a.m. The project from start to finish required 65 man/days of labor and was completed in eleven working days.
